Today, Sega posted an interview on its Japanese site about the “Super Game” concept it announced almost a year ago.

The interview, with Executive Vice President Shuji Utsumi, Producer Masayoshi Kikuchi, and General Manager Katsuya Hisai, provides more details on the concept and what we can expect.

The plan was implemented in 2019 and is to increase the value of Sega’s intellectual property, including older ones, to create new games.

In fact, there are several games under development within this framework of “Super Game” and the idea is to create titles that go beyond the conventional framework, for example, creating new entertainment by focusing on the relationship between the players and the public that watches them. to play.

Four points are required for a title to be rated “Great Game” and they are cross-platform, global multi-language support, simultaneous global release, and AAA scaling. Basically, these are games that aim to become global blockbusters.

Around 50 developers are involved in the initial phase of the project, but the expectation is to grow to involve hundreds of people.

Those working on the project are a hybrid team of developers who have worked on console, mobile and arcade games, combining their experience to create titles that only Sega can make.

New external technologies are included. This includes, for example, partnering with Microsoft for the use of Azure in development. In addition to this, Sega promotes alliances with various companies to integrate their technology into their games.

Unreal Engine 5 is used for development and Sega is also collaborating with startups working on AI technology both on back-end work like debugging and front-end work like controlling the in-game camera, live commentary and automation. vocal synthesis.

Developers are also working on creating a development pipeline that automatically generates objects in Houdini, or technology that creates CGI from clothing models.

Interestingly, we learned that the team believes that the key to challenging the global market is “Japanness”, as in Japanese-only games created by people who live in Japan or enjoy Japanese content. This does not mean that only Japanese developers are involved, as a diverse set of values cultivated through experience abroad is also important. Many non-Japanese developers work at Sega and intend to continue promoting diversity in the future, with the goal of working with people who love Japanese content to create games for the global market.
