The Maps app on iPhone is a great way to find local businesses, get turn-by-turn directions, and even discover new places to explore when you’re in a new area. While there will always be people who say that Google Maps is better, I personally haven’t had any major issues with Apple Maps for a while, apart from the odd twist every now and then.

However, when you use Apple Maps to get turn-by-turn directions on a long trip, it can be annoying because you can’t add stops between your current location and your final destination. But that changes in iOS 16 with the new multi-stop routing feature.

Here’s how to add multiple stops in the Maps app on your current iPhone running iOS 16.

Apple occasionally releases updates to iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, and macOS as closed developer previews or public betas. Although beta versions contain new features, they also contain pre-release bugs that may prevent normal use of your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, or Mac, and are not designed for everyday use on a mainstream device. That’s why we strongly advise you to stay away from developer previews unless you need them for software development, and use public betas with caution. If you depend on your devices, wait for the final version.

How to add a stop on a route in Maps on iPhone with iOS 16

  • Launch Maps on your iPhone running iOS 16.
  • Search for a destination in the search bar.
  • Tap Route and make sure Drive is selected in the dropdown menu.
  • Tap Add stop.
  • Find another destination where you want to stop. You can add up to 15 stops.
  • You can rearrange the order of your stops by dragging and dropping a stop in your preferred order.
  • After you add or rearrange a stop, the Maps app recalculates your route, which also takes into account other preferences you’ve set, like when you leave and whether or not you want to avoid tolls and highways. Warnings and prompts will also be displayed.
  • Touch a route to preview turn-by-turn directions for each stop.

    • It’s important to note that unfortunately the Maps app will not automatically optimize your route when you add multiple stops. So when you add a stop, the new stop ends up being the “final destination”, so if you’re planning a long trip with a lot of stops, you’ll want to make sure you put them in an efficient order. That way, you won’t have to go back and forth a lot when you drive, something you’ll want to avoid when gas prices are high.

    The Maps app will also save your travel history in the Recents section, so you can easily retrieve a planned trip with ease. Routes will also sync between devices running iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS Ventura.

    It took a while, but we can finally add multiple stops on a single route with iOS 16. Gone are the days when you could only have one destination on a detailed Maps route! Yes, now we can finally add all the stops we want to reach before reaching our destination and have a complete route for everything. And being able to plan your trip from your Mac and then sync it with your current iPhone is just icing on the cake.
