How to put your iPhone or iPad into DFU mode

If you’re considering jailbreaking, unjailbreaking, upgrading from an expired iOS beta, or just want a fix when all else has failed and the problem won’t go away, you may need to access DFU (Device Firmware Update). Whether you’re using an older device or something much newer, entering DFU mode is considered a last resort. It will also work on iPad and iPod touch.
With DFU mode, you can get your device working again. This is because it puts the device in a specific state that it can still communicate with iTunes on Windows or Finder on Mac, allowing you to restore it, but it won’t activate the bootloader or iOS, just in case your device would really mess up. below. When your device is in DFU mode, you can restore it from any state. However, putting your device into DFU mode can be a bit tricky as it requires precise timing. Here’s how to put your iPhone into DFU mode.

Since iPhone X, most newer iPhones use Face ID instead of Touch ID because there is no longer a home button. Therefore, entering DFU mode can be a bit more complicated than older iPhone models. Here’s how to enter DFU mode on a newer iPhone, like the iPhone 13 Pro.
Connect your iPhone with Face ID to your Mac or PC.
Make sure iTunes (macOS Mojave and PC) or Finder (macOS Catalina and later) is running.
Turn off your iPhone with Face ID if you haven’t already.
Press and quickly release the volume up button.
Press and quickly release the volume down button.
Press and hold the side button until the power off slider appears.
Drag the slider to turn off your device.
Press and hold the Side (Power) button on your iPhone for 3 seconds.
While holding the Side button, press and hold the Volume Down button on the left side of your iPhone.
Continue holding both buttons for 10 seconds.
- If you see the Apple logo, you’ve held it down for too long and need to try again.
Release only the Side (Power) button but keep holding the Volume Down button for another 5 seconds.
- If you see the “Connect to iTunes” screen, you’ve held it down too long and need to try again.
- Timing can be tricky, so don’t be afraid to try again until you get it right.
If the screen stayed black (but is clearly lit), then you are in DFU mode.
At this point, iTunes or your computer’s Finder should have detected an iPhone and allow it to restore.
When in DFU mode, you can downgrade the firmware if needed as it bypasses the iBoot bootloader. Standard recovery mode runs iBoot, which means you can only restore factory settings with the latest iOS firmware.

Since the third-generation iPad Pro (2018), Apple has ditched the home button and Touch ID on current iPad Pro models in favor of Face ID, just like with higher-end iPhone models. So putting it in DFU mode is like with an iPhone with Face ID.
Connect your iPad Pro with Face ID to your Mac or PC.
Make sure iTunes (macOS Mojave and PC) or Finder (macOS Catalina and later) is running.
Make sure the iPad Pro is turned off.
Press and quickly release the volume up button.
Press and quickly release the volume down button.
Press and hold the power button at the top until the power off slider appears.
Drag the slider to turn off iPad Pro.
Press and hold the power button for 3 seconds, until the screen turns black.
While holding down the power button, press and hold the volume down button.
Continue holding both buttons for 10 seconds.
- If the Apple logo appears, you held it too long. Try again.
Release the side button but keep holding the volume button for 5 seconds.
- Remember, if the “Connect to iTunes” screen appears, you held down the buttons for too long and you need to try again.
If the screen stays black but is illuminated, your iPad Pro is in DFU mode successfully.

Drag the power off slider to the right.
Press and hold the power button on the right side of your iPhone for 3 seconds.
Press and hold the volume down button on the left side of your iPhone while holding down the power button.
Hold down both buttons for 10 seconds. (If you see the Apple logo, you’ve held them in too long and will have to start over.)
Release the power button but keep holding the volume down button for about 5 seconds. (If you see the “Connect to iTunes” screen, you’ve pressed it too long and will have to start over.)
If the screen stays black but clearly lit, that’s it! Your iPhone should now be in DFU mode.

Press and hold the Home button on the front of your device while holding down the Power button.
Hold down both buttons for 10 seconds. (If you see the Apple logo, you’ve held them in too long and will have to start over.)

If the screen stays black when it’s on, it’s over! Your iPad or iPod touch should now be in DFU mode.

At this point, iTunes or Finder should show you an alert that it has detected your iPad or iPod touch and will allow you to restore it.
Reminder: If you see logos on your device, it may be in recovery mode, but not in DFU mode. If recovery mode works, great. If not, try DFU mode again.
DFU mode can fix most iPhone problems if nothing else works
Yes, it can be a bit tricky to put your iPhone, iPad or even iPod touch into DFU mode as timing is a bit tricky. However, with persistence, you should get there. It only takes a few tries, even for us professionals. If you have a problem with your device and nothing else seems to help, DFU mode restore is probably your best option.
May 2022 Update: These are still the steps to enter DFU mode.
patience game
Beta testers will likely wait until July to get their hands on iOS 16
If all goes as in previous years, we can expect Apple to release the first developer beta of iOS 16 on June 6, the same day it was announced. It’s the date of the WWDC22 keynote, but those in the public beta program should wait a bit longer.

Apex Legends Mobile has been in the works for quite some time, promising players an on-the-go battle royale experience. While it certainly provides that portable shooting experience, it manages to separate itself from its source, for better or worse.
