Today, Japan held elections for the House of Councilors, the upper house of the National Diet, and popular manga artist Ken Akamatsu managed to win a seat.

Akamatsu-sensei, who made his professional manga debut in 1993 with Hito Natsu no Kids Game, is best known for Love Hina, the romantic comedy serialized in Kodansha’s Weekly Shounen magazine between 1998 and 2001, which spawned an anime series, multiple OVAs. , light novels and even video games.

In today’s election, he is running with the ruling Liberal Democratic Party after a campaign primarily focused on protecting freedom of creative expression, artistic freedom from censorship and undue outside influences.

Akamatsu-sensei is the first manga artist elected to the National Diet of Japan and announced his victory on Twitter, mentioning that he will work hard to keep his promises not to betray his constituents.

In a blog post just before the election, Akamatsu-sensei mentioned that he had been drawing manga for 28 years and would sometimes receive comments like “Ken Akamatsu’s manga saved my heart”, which were a great motivating force for him. .

In fact, he himself has been supported by many manga since his childhood. Anime helped him when he had problems during exams and video games helped him when he had problems with work.

Akamatsu-sensei went on to mention that he truly believes that manga, anime, and video games are what got him this far.
