Today, third-party developers had a lot of exciting news to share about add-ons for Microsoft Flight Simulator.

We kicked off with a development update from DC Designs that provided a look at the AV-8B Harrier II and F-4J Phantom II.

With the massive F-15 upgrade complete, work now moves on to the next project: the AV-8B Harrier II. This will contain the AV-8B and GR5 Harriers, which will have identical cockpits except for different ejection seats. It would have included the earlier GR3 and Sea Harrier variants, but the differences between the types are too great – each would require completely different internal and external models, which is too much to do in one project and keeps the price reasonable.

The main thing about the Harrier is how difficult it was to fly in real life. Only the best pilots were/are broadcast on Harriers, and many fail to qualify and are “cut off” from conversion units. There are other S/VTOL aircraft in MSFS, but they often use the simulator’s “Slew” feature to “hover”, which removes all aerodynamic and weather influences. Basically, you are not flying when you use this method. The DC Designs Harrier *flies* hovering in MSFS and is therefore affected by wind, weather and all other aerodynamic factors, making it a much more difficult aircraft to control, just like in real life.

Unusually for me, I’m working on the Harrier in conjunction with another major project. The F4 Phantoms are also well advanced and will be revealed in more detail in a few weeks. For those of you wondering, the Phantoms will be a set of multiple variants sharing the same cockpit. In fact, additional variants are much easier to add on the basis of the F4-J. Confirmed variants I would like to include are the F-4J, F-4E, FGR2 and F4-K (Royal Navy). Each will have external differences centered around the shape of the nose and rear wing, as well as a wider rear fuselage and different exhausts for the Rolls Royce Spey engines on the UK FGR2 variant. It’s basically the way things were done in real life.

We start with Homasim who liberated Tehran Mehrabad International Airport (OIII) in Iran. It is the same developer that launched the excellent Tehran Imam Khomeini Airport.

It is available from the Aerosoft store for $21.95, including applicable VAT.
