Samsung Gear S3: release and price
Gear S3 takes two. Together with the Galaxy Note 7, Samsung atIfa 2016 brought the new generation of smartwatches. The philosophy followed is simple: two models much more watches, less hi-tech product for a select few. But without neglecting some necessary functions such as IP68 certification to withstand diving (1.5 meters for 30 minutes) and dust, or the integrated GPS. The two versions of the Gear S3 are Frontier And Classic. The declared objective of the Korean manufacturer is “to adapt to everyone and to any lifestyle”. Here, then, that Frontier exhibits a more gritty and compact look, therefore it is proposed as the perfect solution for those who prefer outdoor activities without sacrificing style and functions.
For its part, Gear S3 Classic has been designed to be elegant, with a minimalist style that is typically wristwatch. The latter model, the company explains, was designed paying “meticulous attention to detail”. Shape and size have been chosen to recreate the feeling of coherence and style found in luxury watches.
In any case, Samsung’s stated intention is always to enrich the ecosystem of accessories that gravitates around smartphones. Explains Younghee Lee Executive Vice President of Global Marketing, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics: “With the Gear S3 we remain true to the tradition of offering wearables in different versions to emphasize each consumer’s unique lifestyle. Equipped with smart functions and an elegant and sophisticated design, the Gear S3 represents a significant enrichment of our smartwatch offering ”. Samsung will bring the new smartwatches to Italy for November at a price that will be around 400 euros.
More and more watch
As part of the presentation of the Gear S3, Samsung has grasped. an opportunity to analyze. The European wearable market has started growing in double digits since last year and will maintain such a high pace until 2020. Of the 5.5 million devices sold so far, most have been smartwatches. Hence the need to continue to evolve the product: to increase the duration of the battery, study more fashion design and increase the solidity. Also because the functions most requested by users focus on a greater availability of interactions with the smartphone, mobile payments, water resistance, control tools in the context of an IoT scenario and tools for fitness (including GPS). Following these trends, Samsung has identified the innovations to be introduced on the Gear S3: restyling of the graphic interface and greater cohesion to the ecosystem. The case has a diameter of 46 mm (display SuperAmoled 1.3 ”with a resolution of 360 × 360 pixels – 278 ppi) and the aesthetics were developed with the help of Yvan Arpa to give a much more traditional watch look.
While with the artist Arik Levy the straps (distributed on dedicated channels) and the layout of the display were designed, so that it resembled as much as possible the classic wrist models. There are therefore 18 “faces” that personalize the Tizen operating system and numerous variants of matching straps are offered, both in leather and synthetic material (22 mm pitch). There crown remains rotatable as in the case of the Gear S2 in order to control the functions made available by the operating system. Including the ability to manage incoming calls; to report the presence of the integrated speaker to manage conversations.
Another area in which Gear S3 wants to make a difference concerns outdoor activities, with altimeter, barometer, Gps (also operational to support the Sos functions) and integrated speed meter, in addition to the usual resources dedicated to fitness. To support these needs, a 380 mAh (up to 5 days of autonomy). “With the Samsung Gear S3, we aimed to integrate tradition and technology by presenting an extraordinarily intelligent smartwatch. The large display is inspired by styles that characterize the most prestigious watch brands in the world. Gear S3 is bound to stand the test of time as it is a classic timepiece featuring cutting-edge technological innovations, ”says designer Yvan Arpa.
In addition to the IP68 certification, the Gear S3 has the display protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass SR + plate, specifically designed for wearable devices to offer a sharper, more robust and scratch-resistant display. It also adopts technology Always On Display (AOD) full color 16 megapixel 16 to show the time on the display at any time instead of automatically switching to black, giving the dial a sophisticated style that caresses the senses and reproduces that of a luxury analog watch. Finally, in the event of an emergency, users can activate the SOS and localization functions to alert emergency services, friends and family in the presence of critical situations, even without having the phone at hand. Finally, the app development kit for Gear S3 provides support for Knox Tizen in order to enable control functions, management and the development of customized applications for the ecosystem of Samsung wearables, even in the business environment.
