Sony Completes Bungie Acquisition and Officially Welcomes Destiny 2 Developer to the PlayStation Family

Today, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire Destiny 2 developer Bungie.

The announcement was shared on Twitter, as can be seen at the bottom of the article.

The deal was originally announced in January, with Sony committing to giving Bungie the freedom to “independently publish and develop” its games, targeting “fans across multiple platforms and entertainment mediums.”

In fact, the PlayStation house explained that the purchase of Bungie was not simply a decision to increase its portfolio with one more studio and its games.

The real goal was to gain Bungie’s expertise in creating and managing games as a service, followed by announcing massive plans to enter that market with many games.

According to the PlayStation house, the company plans to run 12 live service games by 2026, including two new and unannounced ones that will launch in the current fiscal year (before March 2023) not counting Destiny, another three that will appear between April 2023 and March 2024, four new titles between April 2024 and March 2025, and another two titles between April 2025 and March 2026.

Certainly, this is not a small initiative driven by a single acquisition. Of course, Bungie won’t be developing all of them directly.

It will certainly be interesting to see how the results and long-term ramifications of this major acquisition unfold.
