What is the Bitcoin Academy? Dorsey’s initiative with Jay-Z
Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey and legendary rapper Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter fund the Bitcoin Academy (BA). Created as an exclusive program for residents of Marcy Houses, a New York City-owned public housing complex, to provide access to free Bitcoin educational courses.

The program was created in collaboration with Crypto Blockchain Plug and Black Bitcoin Billionaire with two modalities: online and face-to-face. Residents of Marcy House can register for classes through the link below.
The program will receive “on the ground” support from Dorsey’s Block and the Shawn Carter Foundation. This organization stated the following about its purpose:
This innovative program aims to educate and empower the community, remove certain barriers to access, and empower residents to learn more about Bitcoin in particular and financial wellness in general.
Additionally, the Shawn Carter Foundation says the program will try to expand to other neighborhoods in the future. “Education is power,” the organization said.
Marcy, the town’s housing complex, played a key role in Jay-Z’s education. The legendary rapper said:
Marcy, a place that taught me so much, is hopefully the first of many. The simple goal is to provide people with tools to build their independence and then that of the community around them.
The show will feature Lamar Wilson, featured on Vice News and The Breakfast Club, and Najah Roberts, featured on CNBC Fast Money and Afro Tech, as instructors. The courses will cover the basics of Bitcoin, how it works, how it works, and how people can use it to “build” their “own financial future.”
The program will also teach ‘general finance’ as a way to ‘build community knowledge’. The classes will be offered, according to the official website, from June 22 to September 7.
Jack Dorsey’s Bitcoin-based initiative to improve the world
Access to the internet and devices is one of the biggest barriers preventing people from learning more about Bitcoin. Because of this, attendees will receive MiFi devices and a one-year limited data plan with smartphones “if needed.”
Participants will be able to keep the devices provided by Bitcoin Academy. Residents of Marcy Houses who wish to participate in face-to-face classes will be served dinner.
The program provides for the creation of a “Crypto Kids Camp” that will take place over two Saturdays and will be aimed at children and adolescents from 5 to 17 years old, the official website said. Through his Twitter account, former Twitter CEO and current Block CEO Jack Dorsey had this to say about BTC and the BA program:
Bitcoin is becoming an essential tool for many people in Africa and Central and South America. We believe that the same potential exists within communities in the United States. Our goal is to show that empowering people with powerful tools allows them to build greater autonomy.
Dorsey emphasized that “education is where we start.” The program is part of a long-term plan to empower communities around the world to use BTC and help them gain greater financial independence.
Jay-Z and Dorsey launched the Bitcoin Development Fund for India and Africa in 2021. The initiative was initially funded by a 500 BTC blind trust to support BTC development in the region.
The initiative has announced that relevant members of the BTC community will be part of its board. The blind trust board members are Ojoma Ochai, Obi Nwosu, Abubakar Nur Khalil and Carla Kirk-Cohen.
