However, they were not perfect. Google left a lot of room for improvement and we hope the Pixel 7 can deliver. We got our first look at the 2022 flagships during Google I/O 2022 on May 11, but there’s a lot we’re not sure about. Google Pixel 7 design and display
Any design change in the Google Pixel 7 is likely to be a refinement rather than a reinvention, and it turned out to be the case, judging by the images Google released at I/O in May. We haven’t seen the front of the phone yet, just the back, but that single camera bar on the back of the device remains.
The two-tone design remains, but Google has slightly changed the casing around the camera lens on the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro to give them a more distinctive look. It’s especially nice on the white version of the Pixel 7, which has a silver camera bar.
However, our reviewers of the Pixel 6 and its Pro counterpart commented on the decision to use a glossy glass finish for the rear. The Pixel 6 Pro was like “trying to touch a bar of soap with sweaty palms,” while the Pixel 6 picked up every fingerprint, our testers commented. That doesn’t seem to have changed with the Pixel 7.
The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro had 6.4-inch and 6.7-inch screens respectively and Google isn’t saying if that will change for the 2022 Pixel 7 series. Only the Pro version offered a variable 120Hz refresh rate and we’d expect parity for the Pixel. 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, making both phones great options for gamers.
Google Pixel 7 Specifications
Google was especially excited about its new Tensor chipset, which debuted in the Pixel 6 lineup. Google has confirmed that the Pixel 7 will be powered by a second-generation Tensor chip.
“Our upcoming Google Tensor release will power these devices, which are designed for those looking for the latest technology and the fastest performance,” the company said in a blog post teasing the new phones. It’s not yet clear if Google has a new version of the Titan M2 security chip that debuted with the Pixel 6 series.
Another area for improvement could be battery life. Our Pixel 6 Pro review called the 5,003mAh battery output “mediocre.” Perhaps further optimization of the chipset, rather than the presence of a larger cell, could rectify this. Since the maximum storage option is 256GB (with no microSD expansion option), we’d also like to see Google release a 1TB option for power users.
Google Pixel 7 cameras
Google’s computational photography skills have proven to be excellent stand-ins for cutting-edge camera hardware throughout the lifespan of the Pixel series, but the company has taken it a step further with the Pixel 6 range.
The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro offered a 50-megapixel main wide sensor (1.2μ pixels, f/1.85, 1/13-inch sensor), 12-megapixel ultra-wide angle with a 114-degree field of view. The Pro added a third sensor; a 48-megapixel (f/3.5) telephoto lens with 4x optical zoom and 20x Super Res zoom.
The first official images reveal that Google is sticking with the dual-camera format for the Pixel 7 and the triple-camera setup for the Pixel 7 Pro. Google is keeping quiet about the specs for now. We mentioned the revamped camera housing above.
New camera features could come through software and algorithmic improvements. For example, when it launched the Pixel 6, Google focused heavily on features like Real Tone, which promises more accurate reproduction of skin tones, Motion Mode, which is designed to make action shots easier, and Magic Eraser. , which allows unwanted elements of shots to be easily removed. We’ll know more later in the year.
Google Pixel 7 price and availability
When it comes to flagship models, Google has been reliable in terms of release dates. So we’re expecting the Pixel 7 to arrive in late October 2022 as the first device to run Android 13. It promises nothing more than “dropping” at this point.
The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro 2022 models started at £599/£699 respectively. We expect Google to keep that price for the Pixel 7 unless there’s a spec surprise.
