Who is Raikou in Pokémon Go?

Source: The Pokemon Company

Raikou is part of a trio known as the Legendary Beasts of Johto. Each based on a large cat, the Legendary Beasts were originally three Pokémon that perished in a fire and were reincarnated by the legendary bird Ho-Oh. Ho-Oh gave each of the beasts powers based on the events of the fire. Raikou was given electrical powers to represent the lightning that started the fire.

In more practical terms, Raikou is one of the strongest non-Shadow Electric-type Pokémon and Shadow Raikou is the strongest Electric-type in Pokémon Go. It’s definitely a Pokemon you’ll want on your roster. Even if you already have a high Raikou IV/CP, the extra Raikou Candy will come in handy to power up your Shadow Raikou.

What are the best counters for Raikou in Pokémon Go?

As a pure Electric-type, Raikou’s only weakness is Ground-types. His moveset is almost entirely electric, save for a single Ghost-type attack, Shadow Ball. Mega Evolution does not currently play a significant role in this raid. Once introduced, Mega Garchomp, Mega Camerupt, or Mega Swampert would make this raid even easier, but until then, there are plenty of Ground-type Pokémon and Shadow Pokémon to add to your roster.

Landorus (Therian form)

Source: The Pokemon Company

Although Landorus in Incarnate form has a better moveset, Landorus in Therian form is still the best counter to Raikou. As a ground and flying type, Landorus resists Electric-type damage and has no relevant weaknesses. It hasn’t been available as often as the other form, but they share the same Candy, so you likely already have the resources to power it. If you’re going to bring a Therian in Landorus form to this raid, you’ll want it to know Mud Shot and Earthquake.

garchomp

Source: The Pokemon Company

A Gen IV pseudo-Legendary Pokemon, Garchomp is an excellent counter to Raikou even without its Mega Evolution. In his early stage, Gible has appeared in a number of events, including Community Day, so he probably already has at least one Garchomp on his roster. This Dragon- and Ground-type Pokémon resists Raikou’s Electric-type attacks and has no weaknesses for the Thunder Pokémon to exploit. The best moveset for your Garchomp is Mud Shot and Earth Power. If you don’t have the community exclusive move of the day or the Elite TM to spare, Earthquake still puts Garchomp on early counters.

hyper top

Source: The Pokemon Company

Gen I Rhyhorn’s Sinnoh Stone evolution, Rhyperior was already available, but after Rhyhorn Community Day, there’s no excuse not to have high Rhyperior CP. This Ground and Rock-type Pokémon resists Raikou’s Electric-type attacks and has no weaknesses that Lightning Pokémon can exploit. However, you’ll want your Rhyperior to know Mud-Slap and Earthquake, not the Community Day-exclusive move Rock Wrecker. If your Rhyperior already knows Rock Wrecker, don’t make it disappear. Rock Wrecker is super useful in other raids and a Legacy move that you won’t be able to pick up without Elite TM.

excadrill

Source: The Pokemon Company

Originally found in the Unova region of Gen V, Excadrill is the final evolution of Drilbur. Since Drillbur has appeared in a number of events and only requires 50 candies to evolve, you probably already have at least one or two Excadrill activated. A Ground and Steel type, it has no relevant weaknesses and resists Raikou’s Electric-type attacks. You’ll want him to know Mud-Slap and Drill Run to challenge Raikou.

Groudon

Source: The Pokemon Company

Pokémon Ruby’s legendary pet Groudon performs very well against Raikou. He has appeared in a number of raids and as research breakthrough rewards, so you probably already have a few on your list. As a Pure Earth-type, he takes less damage from Raikou’s Electric attacks and has no relevant weaknesses. Groudon’s best moves against Electric-types are Mud Shot and Earthquake.

Landorus (incarnated form)

Source: The Pokemon Company

Although his Therian form works better, Landorus Incarnate is also a great counter to Raikou. It had several runs in Raids and was also available as a Pokémon Go Battle League reward encounter, so you may already have one or two powered up. As a Ground and Flying type, Landorus has no weaknesses for Raikou to exploit and is resistant to Electric attacks. Mud Shot and Earth Power are the moves you’ll want your Landorus to know for this fight.

Rydon

Source: The Pokemon Company

While Rhyperior is definitely better, Rhydon also performs very well against Raikou. This Gen I Ground and Rock type resists Electric-type attacks and has no relevant weaknesses. It’s also incredibly common and has been a part of the game since day one. If you bring Rhydon into this raid, you’ll need Mud-Slap for the fast attack and Earthquake for the charged attack.

Crookodil

Source: The Pokemon Company

Krookodile from Gen V is another great counter if you have one. His first stage, Sandile, is only available in 12km Strange Eggs salvaged from Team Go Rocket leaders, so many trainers don’t even have one, let alone the Candy to power it up. However, if you have it, this Ground and Dark type resists all of Raikou’s moves. You will want your Krookodile to know Mud-Slap and Earthquake for this fight.

golurk

Source: The Pokemon Company

Originally discovered in Gen V’s Unova region, Golurk performs well in this Raid. As a Ground and Ghost-type, he resists Electric attacks, but takes double damage from Shadow Ball. Golett is a fairly common egg and has appeared in various Halloween events. Also, it only requires 50 candies to fully evolve, which leaves plenty of leftovers to power up. Mud-Slap and Earth Power are the moves you’ll want for this raid.

mamochoon

Source: The Pokemon Company

Originally found in the Sinnoh region of Gen IV, Mamoswine is the final evolution of Swinub from Gen II. It’s been featured in a number of events, including Community Day, so you probably have plenty of candy to fuel your Mamoswine. An Ice and Ground type, he resists Electric attacks and has no weaknesses that Raikou can exploit. Mud-Slap and Bulldoze is the moveset you’ll want your Mamoswine to know.

golem

Source: The Pokemon Company

The Gen I Golem is a great counter to Raikou. It’s a Rock and Ground-type, so it has no weaknesses for Raikou to exploit, and it’s resistant to Electric-type damage. As a Gen I Pokémon, it was already incredibly common, but with its Alolan variant so often featured in events and sharing the same Candy, there’s no good reason not to have at least one boosted. Mud-Slap and Earthquake are the moves you’ll want your Golem to know for this fight.

Donfan

Source: The Pokemon Company

Originally found in the Johto region of Gen II, Donphan is the last of our best counters for Raikou. As a pure Ground-type, he has no relevant weaknesses and is resistant to Electric-type moves. Donphan is also very common, with the first stage of him, Phanpy having appeared in events. If you bring Donphan into this fight, you will need Mud-Slap for the fast move and Earth Power for the charge.

Backups?

Although most players can team up with the best counters, if you find a gap in your team, there are plenty of substitutes that work well in larger groups. Just make sure you’re dodging and one of the following might be a good alternative:

Note: While Mega Evolved Pokémon are included in this list, they won’t provide the same kind of Mega Boost that’s normally a priority, so there’s no need to build a team around one or necessarily waste the Mega Energy it gives them.

shadow pokemon

Rebalancing Shadow Pokemon rescued from Team GO Rocket makes them excellent Crystal Cannons. Not only are his stats improved, but during special events or with Elite TM, it is possible to modify his moves. If you have any of the following Pokémon with the correct move, they will work well in this raid:

How many players does it take to beat Raikou in Pokémon Go?

While it’s technically possible for three top trainers with the best counters and favorable weather conditions to defeat Raikou, if you’re lower level or don’t have the best counters, you may need them. Four or five to one of the mega-evolved. soil types are available. .

Weather conditions that may affect this raid include:
