The Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak expansion offers a new base, as well as new locations, monsters, and gameplay elements. A new type of hunter rank is also coming in the form of the master rank, for really experienced hunters. Players will need to complete the 7★ Hub Quest, “Serpent Goddess of Thunder”, before being able to access Sunbreak content. Players will be moving from their old hub in Kamura Village to a brand new location to experience the events.

This new location is the coastal city of Elgado, where the player will be taken after being rescued by the mysterious Royal Knight, Lady Fiorayne, from an ambush by Lunagaron. Fiorayne asks the player for help in investigating attacks and sightings of unusual monsters in her own country, since the player rescued Kamura from the Rampage.

Elgado features a forge, canteen, quest counter and merchant, perfect for any budding hunter. The city’s base of operations is at the Command Post, where investigations are underway to prioritize the elimination of a trio known as The Three Lords: Malzeno, Garangolm, and Lunagaron.

Players will encounter a host of new characters, each with their own role in the story. New Wirebug attacks and a new Master Hunter Rank will eventually be available, bringing a new depth to the gaming experience.

    Are there new monsters?

Several new monsters are coming to the Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak DLC expansion.

The Elder Dragon, Malzeno, is the flagship monster of Sunbreak, one of the Three Lords of Elgado. We still don’t know much about this monster, but let’s assume it’s an integral part of the story.

Garangolm is a fanged beast that resembles a primate and will not hesitate to use its entire body to attack hunters. With its right arm covered in moss and its left arm dripping with magma, this monster can use Water- and Fire-type elemental attacks to sink hunters into the ground.

Lunagaron is a fanged wyvern, who performs ice attacks that stop hunters in their tracks. When enraged, it rears up on its hind legs to keep its massive claws ready and available to slash at anything in its path.

A subspecies of the mischievous Bishaten, the Blood Orange Bishaten tends to prefer throwing dangerous and explosive pineapples at hunters rather than persimmons that can heal them. Hunters will need to be very careful when dealing with this ultra-fast beast.

Astalos returns from previous Monster Hunter games and will be available for the first time in Monster Hunter Rise. Astalos is a flying wyvern that uses electricity to attack his enemies, storing excess electricity in his wings, tail, and horns. You’ll have to be careful, because you don’t want to get too close to this flying beast.

    Will there be amiibo support?

Yes! While it is unknown if the original Monster Hunter Rise amiibo will offer new content, Capcom has announced that the Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak amiibo will be released alongside the DLC expansion. These amiibo offer exclusive layered armor sets for Hunters, Palicoes, and Palamutes, while also allowing the player to participate in the game’s daily lottery to receive useful items to make quests more fun.

Will there be crossplay with PC?

Unfortunately not. Capcom announced via a tweet on the official Monster Hunter Twitter account that after “reviewing it through the development process” it appeared that they “were unable to implement it this time.” Patches are often released to update existing content, so there is always hope that things will change.

We heard your requests for Cross-Save/Cross-Play for #MHRise and #Sunbreak, but unfortunately, after reviewing it during the development process, we found that we couldn’t implement it this time. As always, we appreciate your continued feedback and support.

Monster Hunter Rise allows for a wide variety of player experiences. While the DLC isn’t necessary to fully enjoy the game, it’s nice to have additional content to keep you busy. The sheer amount of content at your fingertips, coupled with the incredible gameplay definitely make this one of the best games available on the Nintendo Switch.
