Epic Games’ decision to launch its own digital distribution platform aroused great interest. Interestingly, the duel with Valve does not have to resemble the clash between David and Goliath, because a few days after the launch of the service, the first productions disappeared from Steam.
These include Satisfactory, Rebel Galaxy Outlaw and Genesis Alpha One. These are the first titles to be available from now on exclusively on the Fortnite creators’ platform. Therefore, we are dealing with the fulfillment of pre-premiere promises about expanding the offer of exclusive productions. Moreover, the company also has other plans to attract players to its service.
The relationship with the creators is certainly an important element. They are encouraged primarily by the much lower margin on the game price compared to Valve’s competitive platform. Players themselves will certainly be interested in the fact that there is no DRM protection and that one free game is available every two weeks.
Of course, we cannot count on the birth of a hegemon that will dethrone Steam within a few years and become the center of computer games on PC. However, every manifestation of competition brings benefits primarily to players, for example in the form of the lack of burdensome security measures, free productions and perhaps even lower prices of new games.
