Huawei nova 9 SE leaked: the company’s first phone with a 108MP camera

Can you believe that Huawei hasn’t released a phone with a 108MP camera yet? The company has prioritized sensor size over resolution for its flagship products, but it can afford optical zoom. The 108MP sensors help when the entire phone is digitally zoomed in and these sensors have been great options for mid-range users.

This brings us to the leaked information about the Huawei nova 9 SE, which is expected to be Huawei’s first phone with a 108MP camera. WinFuture reports that the phone will cost between €250 and €280. There are some sub-$300 phones with 108MP cameras on the European market, but the competition is always good.

Huawei has had trouble finding chips, especially those with 5G connectivity, so it’s no surprise that the 9 SE is a 4G-only phone. The Snapdragon 665 is a surprise, however this 11nm chipset was announced in early 2019, making it three years old. The Snapdragon 680 is a newer 4G chip based on a 6nm process, but we suspect that would have stretched the budget too far.

Regardless, the nova 9 SE is said to have 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, plus a microSD slot (which both the nova 9 and nova 9 Pro lack). You’ll be running Android 11 with EMUI 12 on top and won’t have access to Google Play services.

Returning to the camera, the 108 MP main module will be joined by an 8 MP ultra-wide-angle camera and two 2 MP assistants (macro and depth). The 16 MP selfie camera will live in a hole punched in the screen. For comparison, the other nova 9 models have 50 + 8 + 2 + 2 MP cameras on the back and 32 MP on the front (plus an ultra-wide selfie camera on the Pro).

Speaking of the screen, Huawei has chosen a fairly large 6.78-inch LCD screen with a resolution of 1080 x 2388 px (19.9:9 aspect ratio). There’s no word on a high refresh rate or tempered glass, but that information may have been left out.

The phone will also feature a 4,000mAh fast-charging battery (power rating unknown), a fingerprint reader built into the power button, and NFC.

It is not yet known when Huawei will make the nova 9 SE official, but the leak claims that it will arrive in Europe soon.

P.S. We couldn’t help but notice that the Honor 50 SE is almost the same phone, except that it has a 5G-capable chipset (a Dimensity 900). There are a few other differences, like the microSD slot (maybe more, depending on how accurate the leaked information is). However, the Honor 50 SE is not available in Europe.
