Rampage KB-R29 Grand keyboard test

Today, Rampage’s name certainly sounds familiar to fewer people than Logitech, Corsair, Razer or even ASUS. However, the manufacturer can present a surprisingly wide range of products: sound systems, monitors, gamer chairs, mice, headphones, accessories – and of course keyboards. And sometimes there are quite a few products to choose from in each category. This time, a gamer keyboard landed here, which turned out to be an interesting guest in several ways.

Let’s start right away with its origin, because Rampage is a Turkish company, and the keyboard I tried, named KB-R29 Grand, also happened to have a Turkish distribution. And with that, he already knows something that only very few around here know. Of course, it’s another question how much demand there can be for Turkish keyboards in our small country… 😉 But don’t let that fool anyone, the KB-29 Grand is like a good cup of Turkish coffee! Some will love it, some won’t.

As soon as you lift the box, you quickly realize that the keyboard is not a featherweight. Perhaps a little more weight than usual is due to the massive design. The design is quite unique, the keys fit into the plastic frame on the metal-effect housing. In this way, the entire keyboard has become higher from the start, which can also be tilted a little with two fold-out legs. Above the numeric keypad, we find the usual indicators, as well as the Rampage logo in RGB colors. There were no multimedia or other extra keys, they were installed on the left side, on the side of the metal housing. In addition to the usual multimedia buttons (forward, back, play and mute), the volume wheel is also located here. By the way, this requires a rather cheap effect, the rotation can still be said to be quite fine, but the whole structure can be moved up and down, which creates the effect that it is only held by the soul and can remain in our hands at any time. I haven’t had any left so far, but I’m not sure I can say the same after a few months of use.

What definitely adds a lot to the appearance of the keyboard, beyond the usual RGB backlight effect, is the frame lighting. A separately controllable RGB LED strip runs around under the already mentioned extra plastic cover, which can be activated, switched or switched off with a separate key. The Rampage KB-R29 Grand therefore brings the Christmas tree feeling, as expected from all gamer keyboards. We can also mention that it also comes with a magnetic wrist rest, but it’s cheap plastic, which is the minor problem, the bigger one is that the magnets are terribly weak, even a small push will constantly separate it from the case. This could have been solved much better.

As for the internals, this keyboard is offered with blue tactile and red linear switches. The manufacturer did not reveal the exact brand of switches, only that they were optical switches. I got the blue tactile version, which during use brings the experience that one would expect in advance. The keys respond quickly, and of course there is full anti-ghosting support. Although this is highly subjective, the typing experience is not particularly good, which is due to the slightly taller than usual design. During the game, however, it was not uncomfortable for a long time either. And since this is a gamer keyboard, obviously the latter is the more important argument.

The Rampage KB-R29 Grand was certainly an interesting experience, thanks to the Turkish key layout (other Rampage products, on the other hand, are available in Hungary with Hungarian or US layouts). At the same time, I’ve had a number of keyboards of a similar caliber and price point come into my hands over the years, and I’m not sure I’d choose this one if I had to choose. It has interesting solutions, and its appearance is clearly cheeky. But somehow I still didn’t manage to fully fall in love, as I did with several Genesys products before.
