NASA prepares a virtual trip to Mars with Irrational Games for PlayStation VR

Mars is in fashionand not only because of the movie The Martian in which it is time to save Matt Damon (again), but because advances in research on the red planet have increased exponentially in recent years and already There’s less to go before man can leave his mark there. and establish a colony.

To increase interest in Mars and perhaps get used to what awaits us there, lNASA has partnered with the company Fusion Mediathe MIT Space Systems Laboratory and with those responsible for Bioshock, Irrational Gamesto create a virtual tour in which we feel as if we were walking through its reddish wastelands.

The project, The Mars 2030 Experienceis being developed using the Unreal Engine 4 graphics engine and will arrive this year for the main virtual reality devices such as PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR or HTCin addition to being able to view the images on Twitch on any Smartphone.

In the words of Fusion Media’s virtual reality producer, Julian Reyes, with current technology it will be possible to create a very satisfactory and interesting experience for all audiences.

We want people to really feel like they’re there on Mars, and the engine is perfect for making this happen in VR.

We’ve worked closely with developers at Epic Games before and believe Unreal Engine 4 is revolutionizing real-time graphics.

This collaboration between Fusion Media and NASA will go further; the results of the current study will be used to create transportation systems, modify certain operations and train astronauts who are going to really travel to the planet. The idea is that Mars will be the first of many virtual experiences What NASA would be thinking about using this technology, perhaps they are preparing a visit to the moon, Saturn or a stressful repair on a lunar module like in the movie Gravity. One more reason to save up for PlayStation VR, don’t you think?
