Apple Maps Japan gets cycle routes and Look Around extensions

Apple also updated its Maps software in Japan with bike routes and expanded Look Around.

Atadistance reports that following AR instructions that arrived in Tokyo earlier this week, Apple has also added nationwide cycling routes and Look Around extensions in select cities:

A busy week for Apple Maps Japan, the first walking directions with augmented reality, today we have highly anticipated bike routes and Look Around expansions to Sapporo, Niigata, Shizuoka and Akashi. Bike routes are confirmed for Greater Tokyo, Greater Yokohama, Kyoto, and seem to apply across the country: I can plan bike trips in Kagoshima with the macOS Maps app.

The report notes that while Apple’s image collection is not as extensive in Japan as it is in the US and Europe, Apple’s cycling data offers suggested routes for faster, less-trafficked routes, with no sections to walk etc.

The report goes on to note that the most expensive Apple Maps elements to have landed in Japan are real-time transportation, detailed city experience, and new Apple Maps data.

As noted, Apple updated Maps in Tokyo earlier this week with new AR walking directions. Look Around first arrived in Japan in August 2020, and Apple first announced new Maps updates for iOS 15 in September.

With WWDC 2022 and iOS 16 just around the corner, it’s very possible that Apple will add even more new and exciting features to its Apple Maps software. Apple Maps may have gotten off to a rocky start in life, but it now exists as one of the best iPhone navigation apps you’ll find, especially in the Apple ecosystem thanks to integration with devices like the Apple Watch Series 7.
