Apple removed passwords with new passwords on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV

Apple today announced Passkey, a new, next-generation credential that will make it more secure to sign in to apps and websites on any device, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV set-top boxes.

Announced as part of the macOS Ventura keynote presentation at WWDC22, Access Keys are designed to help replace passwords on Apple devices. Apple says the passwords are problematic because they are stored on web servers, allowing hackers to steal them or trick users into sharing them. It’s also not possible when passwords are replaced with access keys, the company says.

Browsing in Safari is even more secure with Access Keys, next-generation credentials that are more secure, easier to use, and designed to replace passwords. Access keys are unique digital keys that remain on the device and are never stored on a web server, so hackers can’t leak them or trick users into sharing them. Access keys make it easy to sign in securely, using Touch ID or Face ID for biometric verification, and iCloud Keychain to sync across Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV with end-to-end encryption. They will also work in apps and on the web, and users can even log into websites or apps on non-Apple devices using their iPhones.

Support for access keys will allow users to quickly and easily log in to your applications and websites without having to remember passwords of any kind. The connection will be as simple as using Touch ID or Face ID, managing a biometric component that will guarantee that third parties cannot access it. Notably, Apple says that even those using non-Apple devices will be able to sign in with passkeys, though they’ll still need an iPhone to do so.
